Default Can I change the shift knob on my 99 automatic Cavy?

I would like to know if it's possible to change the shift knob on my 99 automatic Cavy. I just don't like the way the stock one looks. If it is possible, any help on how to do it, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to the site, so excuse any ignorance I may display.

ok set ur parking brake (e-brake) and make sure the engine is off

pull the shifter all the way back into first.....look on the front of it...there shuld b lik a rectangle hole in the front and wat looks lik a staple..that thing sis a clip holding the shifter on...take a flat head screw driver and pop it out....then simply pull the shifter up and off....

as for a new shifter? u shuld get one with a button or a lever so u cn still hav a locking shifter...most sold at parts stores are for manuals....

MY ADVISE is to find on out of a differnet car u like probably get one cheap at a junk yard and just swap it out...

THIS is based on how my 89 RS was setup and how our 03 is....both have the buttons on the side

if u have the shifter with the button on top it MIGHT b different.....not sure my 89 Z24 is 5 speed

With the automatic, you've got plenty of choices from GM.
Check out your Grand Ams and most anything Pontiac with the same tranny, and any car that is similarly sized from GM will fit.

They all remove and install like Blue stated above so they're quite easy to interchange and exchange.
I'm running the Grand Am GT shift knob that has a button on the side which I use for traction control/ DRL shutoff. You'll just have to wire into the switch that comes with the knob.

So hit up your local junkyard for some shift knobs. There's alot of choices and some second generation Cavaliers/ Sunfires along with some Pontiacs will work too.

Sweet! Thanks a lot guys. I had been looking at the knobs at my local Advance Auto and others, but like Blue said, they are all for manuals. I had noticed the little black thing in the front of the knob, but wasn't sure if that's what it was for. Let's say I just put a manual shifter on it. I know it wouldn't lock anymore, but how easily will it shift without the locking system?

it will shift like your constantly holding the button down..

and if u drive like me thats bad....cuz theres no lock from u kickin it into reverse by mistake..i recomend a stock shifter from another GM car or a locking shifter....but whatever you think looks best! lol

and oh guyz my name is Tyler btw

and lucky u guyz can change shifters....the one in my Z24 u cnt get any after market ones for....instead of using a round shaft it uses a flat rod....its gay lol

Thanks a lot for the information guys. I have a friend at a junkyard keeping a look out for anything that comes in.

This is off of the subject, but I've tried posting several new threads, and it seems like they disappear. Any idea what could be going on?
