Default 1997 Cav Coupe Base, 2.2L.

Not what you think...

I have a 1997 Cav Coupe Base, 2.2L. And everytime i step on the gas, just even a little bit, the car jolts forward. Even while i'm already in motion, it's like as if my car were being pulled by tow straps, and when the straps get tight it yanks on the car. But it's also pretty much the same when i release the throttle. The car jerks, but sort of in an opposite way. Like the car stopped getting yanked on and coasts... I hope that this was a good way to describe it, but it's really annoying. It definitely removes from the whole, smooth driving, aspect of driving this car.

Thanks guys!

Manual or automatic? If it's an auto, I would suspect the converter. I would also say to check your motor mounts and cv joints for excess play.

It's an auto. The torque converter? Ugh, that'd be a pain. Motor mounts you say? Could i just put the car on jack stands on the front, and run it with no wheels and see if the motor moves? And then check the CV joints while i'm at it? Or is there a better way to check if the motor mounts have gone to crap...?

Leave it on the ground. Have someone else put it in gear while holding the brakes. If the mounts are bad, it will move alot. So would the cv's. Give it a shot and let us know.

Wait, just have someone turn the car on, hold the brakes, and shift it into drive? Leave the hood open and see if the motor moves? Should i at least move the car? I will try to give a diagnosis of the situation.

Drive, then reverse, then drive again, etc... if it's the mounts, you'll want to see how much it moves forward and back. Let us know.

Yeah, it's the motor mounts. I mean, why else would the engine jerk that much....Well over an inch and a half in both ways while shifting. It's really quite scary, but it makes me feel like i've got a huge 600+ whp blown 4 banger...lol...

So, where exactly are the motor mounts? Which ones do you think i should swap out, our should i do them all? How hard do you think it would be? Considering it's pretty much just me. Unless my dad decided to help. And we have very basic tools. My family's not very automotively inclined....

The first one I'd look closely at is the dogbone on the pass side bottom. It's easy to get to with the tire off, and it restricts torsional movement (pivoting off of the top motor mount in front of the belts and the transmission side mount). It's not hard to change considering it doesn't support the engine weight. Unbolt both ends, remove, replace, bolt up, done. Then check things out before buying any other mounts.

So, if the motor is moving forwards and back in relationship to the orientation of the car this would be the motor mound responsible of keeping all of that in line? This is starting to seem much easier than expected.

Yes. The top mounts can go bad and give a little slop, but not that much.
